Angel Haven – Child Rescue & Protection Centre
Brief History
Angel Haven was born out of a deep need witnessed in the informal settlements of Nairobi, where vulnerable children face daily risks including neglect, abuse, trafficking, and extreme poverty. Since our founding, Angel Care Trust Africa has worked closely with community health promoters, schools, and local authorities to identify and support at-risk children. At first, most rescued children were temporarily placed under the care of private individuals and well-wishers within the community. However, a rising number of cases often involving severe neglect and abuse exposed the limitations and risks of this informal approach. One such case became the defining moment that led to the establishment of Angel Haven.
The Story That Sparked Angel Haven
In early 2019, our team was called to assist with the case of a 7-year-old girl named Ruth Achieng, who was found alone and in distress near a dumpsite in Mathare slums. She had been physically abused and eventually abandoned by her guardian. After emergency intervention, Achieng was placed in the care of a kind-hearted community volunteer. Though this provided temporary safety, the situation highlighted the urgent need for a structured, secure, and professionally managed rescue home especially as similar cases surged. Her story became the catalyst for establishing Angel Haven: a permanent Child Rescue and Protection Centre where vulnerable children could find lasting safety, healing, and hope.
About the Programme
Today, Angel Haven stands as our flagship initiative, an integrated child protection hub providing rescue, shelter, counselling, education, and rehabilitation services to children from Nairobi’s informal settlements. Beyond emergency rescues, the Centre also accommodates street-connected and slum-dwelling children who voluntarily seek a better life away from crime, drugs, and exploitation. We provide them with a safe home environment, nutritious meals, education, psychosocial support, and mentorship. Trained caregivers and professionals ensure that every child receives the care and stability needed to heal and grow. Angel Haven is more than a shelter, it’s a beacon of hope and transformation, restoring childhood and building futures. Our vision is to expand Angel Haven into a model Child Protection Village, complete with transitional housing, a formal school, vocational training, and a clinic that serves both resident children and the surrounding slum community.
